Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori, a legendary innovator, was the first female physician in Italy. She was one of the great pioneers in studying the intellectual development of the young child. Through observations in her medical practice, she analyzed how children learn - particularly from their environment. Through scientific observation in child development, she created a series of activities and set of materials and apparatus designed to develop children’s bodies and minds systematically, and the didactic objects for sense training and physical development. She created a daily program, which includes a large variety of social enterprises in which children are trained for the duties of practical life and hygienic are for themselves, as well as care and respect for their environment. She established the first ‘Children’s House’ in which children are respected, and given freedom in learning. Montessori’s focus was on building a better world by helping children discover their capacity to live in peace, learn without boundaries, throughout their lifetimes, find meaningful work and discover the joy of friendships and community.
