The School Environment

THMS stands on a one-two acre lot situated on the outskirts of town overlooking the ‘run-off’ of the Trent Canal System. There is much wooded forest area beyond the large stream and also a small waterfall and boat launch within walking distance. The Toddler’s House and Children’s House classrooms are within a 1350 square foot building.

The Elementary & Junior High Programs (which hope to accommodate 8  students  in each) will be located in a separate family dwelling (on same lot) amongst the small Hobby Farm and vegetable garden, and canal system.  The students will also plan to go on various ‘outings’ to a: neighbouring horse farm (involvement in horseback riding, chores, and grooming), local libraries, gym, swimming, ski trips, neighbouring maple sugar bush, concert hall (drama & dance),nursing home, food bank, as well as others of interest to student body.

Spirit of the Hills Elementary Program (SHEP) building is small, cozy, and is a separate ‘living’ quarters to Trent Hills Montessori School building.  It has a Common Room, exercise room, library, laundry and bath facilities. It also has licensed kitchen facilities, so therefore, the plan is to have the Elementary students ‘run the household’ by cooking meals, snacks, doing dishes, and other duties (with the guidance of one qualified Elementary teacher, as well as, perhaps, one live-in supervisor for residence.(if there are to be boarding students). Students may also raise funds for tuition assistance and other school & living expenses. (ie.selling baked goods, or other hand-crafted items, etc..)

There is a small ‘loft’ located in another building on the property which could eventually be (with ‘wood-working’ and renovation help from students) a separate room for students to reflect, socialize, study, do artwork, socialize, and be members of a healthy, small community of students, and ‘guides’. Also, importantly, a place for spiritual self-discovery.
